Archives of the BStU on Stasi-KGB

The Wilson Center’s History and Public Policy Program (HAPP) and the Office of the Federal Commissioner for the Records of the StateSecurity Service of the Former GDR (Behörde der Bundesbeauftragten für die Unterlagen des Staatssicherheitsdienstes der ehemaligen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik – BStU) are proud to announce the signing of a cooperation agreement.

The partnership will document the history of the former East German secret police, the Stasi, and its role in transnational and international relations during the Cold War. The agreement between HAPP and BStU joins similar agreements that HAPP has signed with the Czech Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (USTR), the Polish Institute for National Remembrance (IPN), and the Bulgarian National Army’s Committee for Disclosing and Announcing the Affiliation of Bulgarian Citizens with the State Security Services (COMDOS).

As part of the joint agreement, the Wilson Center’s Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) will publish, as part of the Cold War Project’s Virtual Archive, selected documents from the archives of the BStU on Stasi-KGB cooperation and cooperation with other communist security services. These documents, as well as documents from the Czech, Polish and Bulgarian archives will be included in the CWIHP Virtual Archive this summer.
